The Hounds converged on Cleveland Heights from Lakewood, North Royalton, Stow, Brunswick Hills, Akron, Kent (2), and Strongsville. A bit after 4 we had a short chalk talk in the bright sunshine of a 90 degree July day. Julia had marked the trail in one of the day's scattered downpours, he led us to the first mark several blocks south on Lee. At the first check we found marks leading to a check at North Park and Lee. Later we learned we had missed a false trail mark. As we crossed a Shaker Lakes dam, this became clear as we found an arrow pointing back at us. It was decided to proceed backwards as the sun gave way to the next short downpour. Between the rain's effects and being backward on trail, the hare led us as much as we followed the marking. Somehow we bypassed a section of swampland, probably because waterways were somewhat deeper than they had been hours earlier. As the sunshine returned we found the beer stop on a penis-shaped lake overlook. On-On again, we looped around the Shaker Lakes enjoying huge trees, ravine-side trails, and a couple of stream crossings. Another downpour pretty much wiped out what was left of our trail marks so the hare kept a close eye on us lest we go too far astray. Sunshine returned as we left the parklands for Cleveland Heights tree-shaded residential streets. In no time we sprinted downhill and to the On-In at the Hare's Lair. Besides our Pubic Hare, the On-In was hosted by the Child family, Hare Julia, Hare-wife Rosie, Hare-son Caleb, and pooch H.I.R. Sidney. Right away the hare transported some back for cars, and Short Hairs found latecummers Free Semen, NHN Keith, and Snowballs waiting at The Tavern. Back at his Lair, the Hare insisted ceremonies be conducted on the front lawn. A few neighbors appeared and observed from the opposite sidewalk, feigning interest in their baby strollers and dogs. The entire pack was honored for our various mis-deeds, the Hare drank A LOT, Rosie did a down-down, 2 1/2 year old Caleb learned to call his dad "Julia" and several new songs, and Sidney did an endless down-down with a hot dog and beer. Dumb-ass announcements included CH4's 7/21 Full Moon run, RCH3's 7/23 run, and the 2005 America's Interhash in Toronto this upcoming Labor Day Weekend (there are over 800 registrants now I think). We closed the circle with a spirited rendition of "Swing Low" and retired to the porch for food. Julia didn't disappoint with chips and homemade salsa, hot dogs with all the trimmings from the traditional catsup/mustard/relish sort to the exotic of Grey Poupon and green hot sauce, and vast quantities of the Golden Nectar of Life: Beer. A fine hash was had by all.
Asst. Hash Cash Report: 9 - 1 hare = 8 paid at $10 each = $80 - $72 to hare = 8 held for treasury by Too. |
